Love can heal us and our community. Allah’s pervasive qualities of love are attainable through our own breath whether we call out fervently or softly. According to the book “Physicians of the Heart” (Meyer et. al, 2011), Ya Barr, agape love, awakens us to the most intimate love God provides, like a womb, and opens us to understand and be kind to strangers.

Ya Halim is God’s most tender love, one that is especially calming in heated moments and opens us to forgiveness. Ya Wadud is the love of God that penetrates deeply into the heart, attaching us to the universe and helping us turn hate into love. Ya Ra’uf is love that endures the most difficult times and allows us to reach others, even when they are suffering and hostile. Invoking God’s qualities is like a software update. When “viruses” like selfishness and hate disable our human functions, we remember God’s features, wash away disease and return balance to find love again.

Lisa C. Saka, who began the path to Sufism as a graduate student nearly 20 years ago, currently lives and teaches in Syracuse.
