In response to current events, Ryan Cooper, a concerned citizen of Reading has called on the residents of Greater Reading to come together for a candlelight vigil in a show of love this Friday, June 5th, in City Park.
Cooper, Mayor Eddie Moran, Councilwoman Johanny Cepeda-Freytiz, and Michael Toledo President & CEO of the Centro Hispano are working with other community partners to help make this show of unity in our community a reality.
Members of the community are invited to join in this peaceful vigil in person and virtually through the social media outlets including BCTV. The public is invited to join or tune in to participate and hear local community and faith based leaders.
Mayor Moran extends his most sincere condolences to the George Floyd family. “I feel the nation’s pain during these difficult times. I stand in solidarity for justice especially with our African- American brothers and sisters. As we learn from these incidents and seek justice nationwide, we should do so in a peaceful manner.”
“I would love the citizens of Reading to be the first community in our country to show the true meaning of life, liberty and love. We cannot go any further unless we show love, give love, accept love, and receive love from one another. The time that we are in, we need to pray more and love more,” stated Ryan Cooper.
“We need to be an infectious act that will spread out throughout the country. Let’s challenge other cities to stand together in a Unity of Love moving forward.”
“Our city has always found a way to come together and rise up in support of those who are hurting during times of crisis,” said Mike Toledo.
“Thanks to the support of Mayor Eddie Moran and his administration, the City of Reading will shine its light to the country and around the world as we stand in unity for justice for our African American neighbors and all marginalized members of our community who are suffering in our efforts to stand in unity and justice for all.”
The Unity of Love Candlelight Vigil will begin at 7pm on Friday, June 5th. The vigil will meet in City Park, and city officials say it will be a peaceful sharing of love. Officials are also asking that social distancing be adhered to and masks be worn at the vigil.
