A friendly gathering spot is developing in the heart of Mānoa Valley, seeking to emerge from the pandemic into the "Summer of Love."

Mānoa Village Gallery has opened a photo exhibit of classic rock musicians, and many of them were captured at their sold-out Hawai’i concerts.

“Wouldn’t it be great to do something that goes back to the Summer of Love, to the ‘60s, but from a Hawai‘i perspective?” said filmmaker Bob Bates.

Also a producer and director, Bates curated "Summer of Love, 14 weeks of Peace and Art." The answer to his question, by the way, is "yes."

In the current show at Mānoa Village Gallery, there are epic images of musicians who shaped the era—many of them taken here at the Blaisdell Arena or even Civic Auditorium.

“I think of Michael Horikawa as this very august curator, well it turns out he was a teenage rock 'n' roll photographer. And he has this incredible collection of photographs. I said this is a unique opportunity for me to present the work of Jim Wiseman," Bates said.

Wiseman passed away as the show was coming together, but his photos of Hendrix, Jagger and Townsend speak for themselves.

Horikawa’s images of Santana, Elton John and Rod Stewart employ an ortho/litho technique developed for capturing images in low light.

“Had a lot of help from Neal Izumi who’s also represented in the show. Neal is a longtime resident, he was born on Maui. He took pictures of the Altamont concert, now known as the end of the sixties, but of course Neal’s photographs are all about joy and expression," Bates explained.

“He also brought to the show, a friend he went to college with, Dave Hori, who had hundreds of high-speed Ektachrome slides of just the best rock and roll performances. These Hawai’i connections allowed us to put together a nice show," he said. “After this, we’re going to do 'Naked Beauty.'"

“Summer of Love” is a trilogy, with the final installment in August: “Surfing Hawai’i, the Cleanest Buzz.”

You may not have noticed Mānoa Village Gallery near Lowrey Avenue on Mānoa Road.

Owner Catherine Cook shows a variety of local artists and jewelry is currently highlighted alongside the photographs.

“We’ve got jewelry from Salty Girl, Cora Yee, Babs Young, and we’ve got a group of people from Moloka‘i that do beautiful Moloka’i puka shell necklaces, bracelets, and they also do gems from around the world. They’re fascinating people to work with, and very high quality work.”

The first exhibition under the "Summer of Love" series continues at Mānoa Village Gallery through July 18.
