Taika Waititi Will Make a Star Wars Movie with 1917 Writer - Vanity Fair

They were both up for Oscars this year. Taika Waititi won for the adapted screenplay of Jojo Rabbit; Krysty Wilson-Cairns was nominated for penning the single-shot epic 1917.

Now they're joining together to craft the next Star Wars film.

The project had been rumored several months ago, but Lucasfilm officially confirmed it on Monday. (It’s no coincidence that this date is a holiday for fans, who celebrate by sharing a greeting: “May the Fourth be with you.”)

No release date was set, most likely because no one in the film industry knows when production will be able to resume amid the coronavirus pandemic. But for now, Star Wars aficionados know the team that will be crafting the next film from the galaxy far, far away.

Lucasfilm also confirmed development of a new Star Wars TV series from Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland, which will air on Disney+. Headland will write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner for the program, which would bring a fourth galactic series to the streaming service. (Season 2 of The Mandalorian is planned for this fall, and two other shows are in the works — one about Diego Luna's Rebel spy Cassian Andor, before the events of Rogue One, and another with Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Kenobi, set in between Revenge of the Sith and 1977's original Star Wars.)

There was no indication which part of the galactic timeline Waititi and Wilson-Cairns (pictured above) might explore together. He directed the finale episode of The Mandalorian (and voiced the killer nanny droid IG-11); his next film is the sports comedy Next Goal Wins, about the soccer team that suffered the worst-ever loss in World Cup history. She, meanwhile, co-wrote the upcoming Last Night in Soho with Baby Driver and Hot Fuzz filmmaker Edgar Wright. Both were expected in theaters later this year. (But, you know — we'll see.)

One potential hiccup in the race to space: Waititi has already signed on to write and direct another major movie under the Disney umbrella. Thor: Love and Thunder will mark his second film with the Chris Hemsworth hammer-thrower after 2017's Thor: Ragnarok — which was widely seen as the film that finally captured the correct madcap tone for the Marvel Studios hero, after two previous attempts. Love and Thunder was supposed to hit theaters on Nov. 5, 2021—but amid the quarantine shutdown, production was stalled, and the debut was shifted to Feb. 11, 2022.
